comunicato stampa

Processes features the work of two students from the MFA Fine Arts Department at the School of Visual Arts and will be on view at the Eastside Gallery, 214 East 21 Street, from June 21 through July 23. A reception for the artists will be held June 26, from 5 to 7pm. Rachel Gugelberger, associate director of Student Galleries, is the curator of the exhibition.

Saskia Jordá explores and dissects information into components, which she describes as, 'a visual vocabulary of absurdity.' Taking illustrations from Roger Jean Segalat's encyclopedia How Things Work as her point of departure, Jorda's series of the same name consists of 18 paintings and collages that represent mechanical processes such as electrodynamics and silkscreen printing. Each collage consists of maps, grids, patterns, transfers, drips and acrylic paint on wood, which are arranged in a grid.

Amy L. Stienbarger, like Jordá, reconfigures a variety of elements to create a 'visual library' of hybrid objects. Stienbarger is interested in the display of contradictory characteristics in objects, such as the presence of humor and tension. Borrowing images and forms from various scientific sources, Stienbarger creates objects that reference the body and develop a personal mythology. Combining found objects and mixed media, her work is displayed in the manner of 'freaks,' or natural anomalies, typically viewed in sideshows or in such collections as Catherine the Great's Cabinet of Wonders.

Besides the Eastside Gallery, the School of Visual Arts operates two additional campus galleries in which exhibitions of juried student work are held year-round. SVA also maintains a professional art gallery in SoHo that offers select students the opportunity to exhibit their work in the same environment as some of the country's leading artists.

Artwork in student exhibitions is available for purchase. A visit to an SVA gallery gives the art lover a valuable opportunity to enhance his/her collection.

Westside Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm; Friday and Saturday, 9am to 5pm; closed Sunday. The Gallery is accessible by wheelchair. For more information, or for samples of the artist work, contact the Office of Communication at 212.592.2010.
