Cafe Gallery Projects presents a key exhibition of works on paper by members of the London Group
Even in 1962, in his British Art since 1900, Sir John Rothenstein wrote of the London Group;
?....it became, and still remains, the principal exhibiting society to which serious emerging talent turns with hope.?
The ongoing success of the London Group is in no small part a consequence of its stylistic inclusiveness as an exhibiting society. One which positively identifies and encourages the development of younger and less established artists.
The results are plain to see in the gallery. Each exhibited work has a quality, integrity and inner consistency which has been uncompromised by any extraneous requirements of a theme or commissioning brief. Individual pieces are given plenty of space within the group show, providing the viewer with an invigorating affect of contrast and variety together with the conditions for concentration and attention that such works require. The whole exhibiting process thereby becomes a necessary crucible for advancing art.
Many of today?s London Group live or work in South East London. As one of a number of galleries in the area, Cafe Gallery Projects and the Bermondsey Artists? Group are pleased to support the London Group and to be able to contribute towards the celebration of the anniversary of its foundation on 15th November 1913, in Walter Sickert?s 19 Fitzroy Street studio, by collaborating with them on this show.
