In these new works, Walsh continues his exploration of verticality and horizontality, through the line itself, in this case, the hand-painted line. Yet, while the previous exhibition at Chac Mool Gallery focused on the graphic discourse between black and white, these seven acrylic-on-canvas works assume a new direction; the interplay between line and fields of color.
Opening reception: Thursday, July 10, 2003 6-9pm
Chac Mool Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of Paintings by
artist Dan Walsh. The artist will be present at the opening, on Thursday
July 10, from 6:00-9:00 in the evening and the exhibition will run through
August 15, 2003.
This is the artist’s second exhibition at Chac Mool Gallery. In these new
works, Walsh continues his exploration of verticality and horizontality,
through the line itself, in this case, the hand-painted line. Yet, while
the previous exhibition at Chac Mool Gallery focused on the graphic
discourse between black and white, these seven acrylic-on-canvas works
assume a new direction; the interplay between line and fields of color.
Screen (60 x 90 inches, Acrylic on canvas), is a Minimalist exploration of
soft grayish blue borders, defined in turn, by black and gray, pale blue,
deep blue, and a faint yellow line that introduces the interior space
itself, a softer grayish-white.
It is a work which builds on an awareness
of space itself, and as a consequence, the color that fills it. In-House
(66 x 90 inches, Acrylic on canvas), focuses on the complementary dialogue
between black and red, but this seemingly simple relationship becomes
imbued with a playful interchange between two lines of geometric red
squares set off into two horizontal spaces which are in turn demarcated by
white lines.
Too late, the eye realizes that these spaces are again set
off by a grayish border at the top, and a fine thin gray line at the
bottom. Again, the space itself becomes a territory for an exploration of
the importance and signification of line and color. These questions find a
poetic response in Untitled 60 x 90 inches, Acrylic on canvas), in which
the black borders waver toward a grayish parameter setting off the
greenish, blue and then yellow squares within, faintly set off by fine
bluish white and deeper yellow lines.
Through these works, Walsh heightens
the viewer’s awareness of space in and of itself, of the squares we
inhabit, of our rectangular world, subtly composed as it is, of
architecture and design, and yes, of light and sky.
