Artists confront the machine

Interactive art by four artists who use technology and machines as the basis for their work.

What happens when art and technology intersect? You'll find your answer at SPACES, as we present Endgame: Artists Confront the Machine. You'll find plenty of innovative, interactive art by four artists who use technology and machines as the basis for their work. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Timothy Brower (Chicago, IL) uses low-tech mechanics to humorously address our culture's desire for progress. Visitors are invited to ride his modified bicycles, but will find that each presents a new challenge or frustration to overcome. Meanwhile, Jason Lee (Chicago, IL) irreverently deals with the frustration of the future with his yelling, card-shuffling, toilet-paper-hurling electronic installations, using video and mechanical contraptions to turn everyday occurrences into art. Scott Townsend (Raleigh, NC) invites viewers to explore the relationships between representation and reality. The artist creates a virtual environment of video footage, interactive CD-ROM, and large digital printouts that visitors can use to examine all aspects of a distant landscape. Technological advancements such as cloning, genetic engineering and psychological medications are addressed in the work of Gail Wight (Berkeley, CA). Wight will exhibit her "zoo" of test tubes containing animal DNA, and several games in which viewers can maneuver psychiatric medication across mazes of neurological systems and brain-wrinkles.
