Women X Women

Giuliana Mariniello - Claire Joubert - Malka Inbal, Susana Girón - Lucia Ganieva - Rania Akel

After meeting in Arles in 2008 during the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie Giuliana Mariniello (Italy), Claire Joubert (France), Malka Inbal (Israel), Susana Giron (Spain) and Lucia Ganieva (Russia-Holland) decided to work on the representations of women in contemporary society. The result is the exhibition Women x Women, where they invited Rania Akel, a Palestinian artist, in order to add a further specific vision and approach.

Giuliana Mariniello (City Icons) is interested in the representation of ‘femininity’ through the images of women in the city, through advertising on means of transportations, posters or billboards.

Claire Joubert shows the serie Mrs Brown Monday or Tuesday extracted from her photographic diary Chaque, conducted since 2006. In her work she pays attention to the thin link between intimate and political by looking, in public places, for the tiny expressions of the feminine.
Malka Inbal's images (Mirrors) work as a mirror dealing with the border between the private and the collective, intimacy and "extimacy", through the prism of the femininity.

Susana Giron (Legacies) documents the gestures and attitudes of elderly women in a small village of Spain and their relationships the new generations of women to which they transmit their sets of values and behaviours.

Lucia Ganieva (Factories) focuses her attention on women working in the textile industry in Russia. Her images between documentary and staged photography offer a transgenerational portrayal of women workers.

Rania Akel (Shadows)uses the shadow as a metaphor of freedom for women since a shadow cannot be either trapped or captured. Her images deal with very strong political and genre issues.

We are all very happy to work together and glad to show that in a world full of conflicts it is still possibile to create bridges and dialogues through art and convey a message of cooperation, creative sharing and friendship.
