comunicato stampa

Antony Micallef, Louise Bristow, Jane Henderson, Dan Baldwin,
Simon Ward, Jason Evans, Neel Morley, Ivan Jones & PURE

This Summer Catto Contemporary is proud to announce the 'Pure Brighton' exhibition, in association with the underground magazine PURE, showcasing some of the leading lights of the Brighton art scene.

Featured artists:
Antony Micallef: Antony was the star of Catto Contemporary's 'Perverse Pop' exhibition of last year. He has won 2nd prize in the BP portrait competition and has been featured in numerous publications, including the front cover of Blueprint magazine and full profile in The Face magazine. He has also been an invited artist in the Semipermanent project (hosted by design is kinky) in Sydney, which profiled international artists and designers from all around the world.

Antony is a highly sought after artist, his loose graphic style is a direct response to contemporary design and the sick glamour world of fashion.

Simon Ward: Simon recently won the Dazed and Confused and Topshop's Recreation Award, which was judged by David Bailey and Sam Taylor-Wood. He also won the UNSCENE Student Turner Prize judged by Meredith Etherington-Smith (Editor, Art Review), Katharine Viner (Editor of Guardian Weekend) and Victoria Lukens (Picture Editor of The Independent on Sunday Review). He has also been short-listed for the International Open Image Competition. His 'Still Life' images are representations of inanimate objects, which echoe the style of 18th century still life painting. Each image is created digitally on a scanner with the real artefact.

Dan Baldwin: Dan's large scale photo-realistic images of animals set off against the natural world of flowers and trees are arresting and have been an instant success. He has shown extensively around Brighton and has recently been featured in Selfridge's windows. Dan's work has an immediate relevance with animals that dominate a graffiti strewn environment, which in turn, speaks volumes about the society we live in.

Louise Bristow: Louise obtained her MA in Fine Art at the University of Brighton and has been shown at numerous venues throughout the area. Louise's drawings and collage work focuses on aspects of the modernist utopia, the dialectic relationship between the outer world of architecture and design, the inner world of humanity and the desire to create order.

Jane Henderson: Jane graduated with MA in Fine Art from Central St. Martins last year, and previously was at the University of Brighton. Jane has been extremely active in the Sussex area and recently took part in the Brighton Festival Fringe. Jane's video and photographic work has an uneasy otherness to it, she explores and examines space and objects as if they were under investigation for a crime or incident that has yet to happen.

Jason Evans: Jason Evans works as a photographer in and out of the Media, contributing to various outlets in the style and music industry producing portraits, documentary, advertising and fashion images as well as engaging with thegallery system. In 2001 he was included in 'Century City' at the Tate Modernand 'Imperfect Beauty' at the Victoria and Albert Museum. This year he hadhis first solo shows: 'Heaven' was a video installation at the Sketch Gallery in London and a two month world tour was exhibited 'live' in digital photographs at Shiseido's la Beaute gallery in Paris. For 'Pure Brighton' he will be presenting for the first time a small selection from a recently completed three year project which he iscurrently editing for publication.

Neel Morely: Over the last 12 years Neel Morely has compiled over 300 pieces of photo booth art. He is currently living on borrowed time because there is only one remaining four-strip photo booth left in Brighton, the rest have been replaced by their digital successors. With the help of a few loyal followers, Neel reproduces famous pieces of art and key moments in popular culture turning them into quirky, colourful and totally original pieces of art, all within the confines of a claustrophobic, 7-foot by 4-foot booth.

Ivan Jones & PURE: The founders of PURE, Tim Hirschmann and Edward Brisbane, have teemed up with their long-time photographer Ivan Jones to create an exclusive, one-off installation for the PURE Brighton exhibition. As well as shooting fashion label Burro's recent campaigns, Ivan has regularly contributed to PURE, creating quirky, edgy and sexy imagery, which has become the magazine's trademark.

Catto Contemporary has been on the forefront of the East London art scene, since its inception. The quality and calibre of the exhibitions has brought the gallery the high calibre publicity, in many lifestyle publications. ''Teaming up with PURE magazine, for this exhibition is a perfect partnership, the magazine has always been on the cutting-edge when it comes to art, fashion and style'', states Ben Austin, Managing Director of Catto.

PURE started out life in Brighton, in September 2001, as an underground style and art publication. Since then it has become a platform for new artistic talent. Tim Hirschmann, editor and co-curator explains; 'Young artists have always had trouble getting their work seen sometimes, regardless of their talent. There is so much artistic flair out there but frustratingly a lot of it remains unseen, our aim is to rectify this'.

Coming up to their second anniversary, PURE feels it is a fitting time for their first exhibition. 'We wanted to wait until we could do it right,'' explains Tim, 'We've had our eye on a few artists but needed to find a suitable gallery space to do their work justice, Catto is perfect!'
