Domicile. Pieces of everyday life, fakes and fabrications, the perception that we promote for those around us and the truth that lies beneath, are the topics addressed by this body of work. Pretty colored pillowcases all in a row, bought to decorate and beautify, are now held in a cold stainless steel box, their significance derived from the troubled times that their owners spent while resting their heads upon them.
"DOMICILE"
MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATION
Pieces of everyday life, fakes and fabrications, the perception that we promote
for those around us and the truth that lies beneath, are the topics addressed by
this body of work. Pretty colored pillowcases all in a row, bought to decorate
and beautify, are now held in a cold stainless steel box, their significance
derived from the troubled times that their owners spent while resting their
heads upon them. Still pretty, but the beauty only serves to provide a veneer of
happiness and harmony until the truth is observed. A series of well-known
paintings encased in a long chrome box, split down their middle by a line of
black paint, now a testament to their inauthenticity. Imposters, trying to
purvey a sense of wealth, culture and importance to the outside world.
Thedra's large fabrications speak to our need to create facades, real or
imagined. The need for appearance over substance, a preference for spending time
isolated hiding our issues and insecurities rather than working toward their
resolution. Like a future participant in "Fight Club" surrounded by ready made
furniture and empty attempts at false self importance and fame, too many are
willing to attempt to fabricate the appearance of celebrity, wealth or
happiness, in spite of the toll that effort takes.
Thedra has been reviewed by ArtNews on multiple occasions, as well as The New
York Times, Dallas Morning News and Houston Press among others. She received her
Masters in Fine Art from Oxford University, where she studied sculpture under
Brian Catling, a mentor to artists such as Damien Hirst and Rachael Whiteread.
Additionally, Thedra has taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at
Oxford University, The Art Institute of New York, The Art Institute of Houston,
The Art School at The Austin Museum of Art, and the Dougherty Art Center.
