Project No. 28
Julia Friedman Gallery is pleased to present "Project No. 28", a solo exhibition by artist Jun'ya Yamaide September 5 - October 18, 2003. "Project 28" features a new series of paintings that explore the role of monuments in contemporary life. Each painting is an elaborate maze, portraying a selection of statues, notable buildings, and other iconic monuments. Acting almost as a travel log, Yamaide's paintings describe the complexity of cultural symbols throughout the world.
In his work, Yamaide employs a range of media including installation, painting, performance, drawing, sculpture, video and photography. His work often engages with the public directly and forms connections between identity, place, memory, and possession.
Yamaide has exhibited internationally at several prestigious venues including the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France; P.S.1, New York, NY; Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; Taipei Biennial 2000, Taiwan; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan.
