comunicato stampa

Rebel House is Bonnefanten Roermond's second exhibition in the ECI Cultuurfabriek. This time, it revolves around Atelier van Lieshout's installation Bonnefantopia (2003) from the Bonnefanten collection, which determined the selection of seven young artists from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Each of the artists' works sheds new light on the various themes from the complex oeuvre of Atelier van Lieshout.

Atelier van Lieshout
(1963, Ravenstein - Rotterdam)
Since the eighties, Joep van Lieshout, frontman of Atelier van Lieshout, has been producing objects made of brightly coloured polyester, which hover between art, architecture and design. A recurring theme in his work is the constrained position of the individual in our strongly regulated society. Van Lieshout's work is rebellious and cross-border, and touches upon vital issues.

Sven Bormes & Dirk Bours
(Cologne, 1980 & Maastricht, 1981)
This project is a collaboration between Sven Bormes and Dirk Bours, in which they respond to the spatial history and decadence of the building. The project represents construction and deconstruction, as well as the transient nature and continual changing of time and space.

Lara Gasparotto
(1989, Liège)
Lara Gasparotto has a very contemporary approach to the medium of photography. Her presence is unmistakable, as if the photos are snapshots of her own life. "What I suggest is a freedom and frivolity for enjoying things...", says the artist.

Lucas Kramer
(1988, Maastricht)
Lucas Kramer's light and sound installations give us a different view of reality. From everyday things, he creates a world that is abstract yet very concrete, and familiar yet alienating.

Anne Lass
(1978, Berlin)
Anne Lass originally studied documentary photography. She picks up on absurd, surreal situations in our everyday life and poetically shows these in her photographs.

Sebastiaan Schlicher
(1975, Roermond – Berlin)
Sebastiaan Schlicher is interested in the human psyche. The figures presented in his work battle with life, in search of a valiant way to conquer their own mortality and insignificance.

Ilke De Vries
(1981, Antwerp)
Ilke De Vries challenges people to talk on camera about a fundamental event in their life. She exposes people's hidden thoughts and emotions with great empathy, holding a mirror up to us without being moralistic.
