An artist who developed his own unique style known as 'metaphysical realism,' a member of the Soviet underground art movement in the 1980s, and a man who has gained international recognition for his contributions to both the fields of science and the arts have placed Dr. Igor Smirnov in a class unto himself.

Smirnov's intellectual imagination, extraordinary colour and shape consciousness, and the layering and unusual texturing methods he applies to his canvas are visually exciting and captivating. His understanding of colour relationship and the influence of hues and classic juxtapositions support and surround his paintings in such a way that he actually creates a new imagery world.

The son of renowned Russian landscape artist, Vasiley Smirnov, Igor graduated from the College of Fine Art in Ekaterinburg, Russia in 1970. Soon after, he spent two years restoring priceless icons and paintings for the Russian Museum and the Museum of Urban Sculptures in St. Petersburg.

In 1986, he received his PhD in Psychology from St. Petersburg University where he researched the effects of electromagnetic radiation on cellular structures. Smirnov would later develop MRET (molecular resonance effect technology) and was later awarded two US patents to develop devices which help protect the human body against the harmful effects of radiation.

Alongside his scientific career, Smirnov was an active participant in the nonconformist or 'underground' art movement in Russia during the 1980s which attracted considerable attention in the Soviet Union and abroad. In 1987, Smirnov's work attracted the attention of then U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, John Whitehead who was in Moscow preparing for the historic meeting between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Mr Whitehead personally requested permission from the Soviet Government to allow the artist to immigrate to the United States.

Today, Igor Smirnov resides in Los Angeles. His work is found in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe and Russia.
