comunicato stampa

Ceri Hand Gallery is delighted to announce Henny Acloque’s third solo show with the gallery. Life After Magic presents a new body of work by Acloque that continues her excavation of historical narrative and landscape paintings, reflecting on a series of seemingly mysterious ‘happenings’ or ‘awakenings’.

Drawing on a Victorian book of fairy paintings that she inherited from her Father, she has been inspired by the imaginary landscapes within the book, eradicating the fairies and replacing them with amorphous abstractions that reference the figure, but also simultaneously reveal, obscure and mask it at the same time.

Acloque’s recent travels to South America and Mexico in particular have led to an interest in shamanistic rituals that aim to see into the past and future. She is interested in a psychological transportation to another place, the impact of the imagination on a place and how the environment affects ideologies and individual and collective behaviour.

In removing the original fairies and reintroducing furtive, agitating protaganists with an external appearance that enhances yet obliterates the landscape, “like introducing a chemical or casting a spell”, Acloque is setting up new rules to be played out.

Henny Acloque was born in 1979 and lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include 'Justice', The China Shop, Oxford, 2012; 'Island of Santana', Chelsea Arts Club, London, 2012; 'Lugar de Culto', Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool, 2012, 'Circumstances', First Floor Projects, London, 2010 and 'A Dressing', Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool, 2009. Group exhibitions include ' John Moores Painting Prize Exhibition', Walker Art Gallery, 2012; 'The Threadneedle Art Prize', Mall Galleries, London, 2011; 'THE FUTURE CAN WAIT presents: Polemically Small', Torrance Art Museum, LA, USA, 2011; 'Fade Away', Transition Gallery, London, 2010 and 'The Future Can Wait', The Truman Brewery, London, 2009.
