..in the twentieth century: original aspects. With over 200 objects on display (furniture, glassware, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, etc.), this exhibition looks at the set of creative and stylistic influences that have shaped design in the present century, as it comes to its end. In an attempt to go beyond the traditional split between functionalism and rationalism it presents a wide range of alternative approaches, from modernism - Art Nouveau, Novecentism, Art Deco - to post-modernism, including design in the post-war period.
..in the twentieth century: original aspects
With over 200 objects on display (furniture, glassware, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, etc.), this
exhibition looks at the set of creative and stylistic influences that have shaped design in the
present century, as it comes to its end. In an attempt to go beyond the traditional split between
functionalism and rationalism it presents a wide range of alternative approaches, from modernism -
Art Nouveau, Novecentism, Art Deco - to post-modernism, including design in the post-war
period. To give an idea of the importance and variety of the artists whose work is included in this
exhibition, we can mention jewellery and metalwork by René Lalique, Salvador Dalà and
Philippe Starck, furniture by Frank Gehry, Gaetano Pesce and Shiro Kuramata, textile designs by
Emilio Pucci and ceramics by Pablo Picasso. The Foundation is host to the only appearance in
Spain of this exhibition, which has been organised by the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts,
itself an associate of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The international tour has been
sponsored by Phillip Morris Companies Inc.
