Joan Witek presents last work including the "Atlantic Series". Picture and drawings with a strong geometic identity.
On view will be the "Atlantic Series," in a variety of media including black pastel, silver pencil, and silver watercolour on film and rice paper. These are dramatic pictures in a narrow horizontal format that shine with a surface light. Although her work has concerned itself with the colour black for several decades, the recent pieces introduce the element of light along
with the black. These geometric works seem to ripple with an ephemeral, mysterious impressionism.
Witek's work is in the collections of over a dozen major museums in the United States including the Metropolitan Museum, and MOMA in New York, the MIT, Harvard and Yale University collections, and SFMOMA and several other West Coast museums Her work has travelled extensively to Austria,
Switzerland, Germany and Italy. This past year she was featured in the Metropolitan Museum's "Recent Acquisitions" Bulletin, which was accompanied by an exhibition that included Richard Serra, Cy Twombly, A.R. Penck, Markus Lupertz and Francesco Clemente among others. She is a recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
