In October 2012, Arena Homme Plus magazine hit the newsstands declaring "BOWIEVIRUS", with an iconic cover image created by David Sims, a montage of rock'n'roll star Vince Taylor, a fashion model, and – what appeared to be - David Bowie. Within the pages of the magazine, artists and photographers referenced, reworked and recontextualised the star, reigniting Bowie's persona for a new audience. For the ICA, BOWIEVIRUS will take physical form through the presentation of selected works and reinterpretations by David Sims from this celebrated issue. This will be David Sims' first solo exhibition in the UK in fifteen years and will consist of a series of new works that further develop the images and ideas originally addressed in the issue.

Having emerged as a key figure in the London creative scene of the early Nineties, photographer David Sims has consistently pioneered in contemporary image making. Creating immaculate yet energetic photographs that eschew simple narrative, Sims works both within and far beyond the established fashion world tradition. From his editorial work for a variety of magazines past and present including Vogue, The Face, i-D and Arena Homme Plus, to his idiosyncratic advertising campaigns for a host of clients including Yohji Yamamoto, Jil Sander, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Prada, Sims' photography is proving to be equally a benchmark and a modern day enigma, appearing in the permanent collections at the Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert museum.

Thursday 25 – Friday 26 April 2013
Parallel of Art & Life
A Conference on the Independent Group

It has been 60 years since the ground-breaking exhibition Parallel of Life & Art took place at the ICA. This two-day event will investigate the exhibition work of the Independent Group at the very institution that first fostered and encouraged its practice. Moreover, the conference will also consider ways in which the Independent Group has been, and continues to be, exhibited. How can the Independent Group's trans-disciplinary practice best be understood and exhibited? The event follows on from last year's event, BUNK: Celebrating 60 Years of the Independent Group, which contributed to a broader understanding of British art and architecture.

Speakers include Kevin Lotery (Harvard University), Claudia Marfella (Kingston University), Ann Pillar (University of Reading), Elly Thomas (Slade School of Art), Jessica Kelly (Middlesex University), Hannah Durham (Architectural Association), Giulia Smith (UCL), Hilary Robinson (Middlesex University), Matt Williams (ICA), Ben Highmore (Sussex University), Michelle Cotton (Firstsite, Colchester), Ben Cranfield (Birkbeck College), Alex Coles (University of Huddersfield), Nayia Yiakoumake (Whitechapel Art Gallery), Martin Hammer (Kent University), Clare Lilley (Yorkshire Sculpture Park), Victoria Walsh (RCA) and Claire Zimmerman (Michigan University), Anne Massey (Middlesex University), Jon Bird (Middlesex University) and many more. In collaboration with Middlesex University and curated by Anne Massey.

Among cinema on offer this week, from 26 April – 2 May we have a film season to celebrate the career of French director Agnès Varda. Films include La Pointe Courte, Vagabond and Cléo from 5 to 7, with the latter two being introduced by Jemma Desai from I am Dora. On Sunday 28 April, we will also be hosting a Members’ Preview for Tropical Malady, a fantastical two-part folk tale that starts off as a straightforward love story before taking an unexpected surrealist turn.

On Saturday 27 April we have MickRonsonfest, an exploration of the career of iconic guitarist and producer Mick Ronson, as we assess his impact on the history of popular music through a series of rare film screenings, talks, and performances.
