comunicato stampa

The fall show at the Matthew Travis Gallery features Columbia-based painter Cesar Correa and Dallas-based sculptor Scott Gentry. Both manipulate recognizable forms to force a visceral and emotional reaction in the viewer.

Cesar Correa is a native of Cali, Columbia. The long years of conflict in his country have had a profound effect on his art. In his series "The Pre-Columbians", he rejects formal representation and embraces the abstract mythological symbols of Columbia's ancient cultures. In his series "The Flowers", Correa freely recreates the colors and textures of native plants in a manner that allows the spectator to exalt in the reformation of these objects in his imagination. In his own words, "The sense of life and the lust for it is encountered in the capacity of transforming and questioning reality."

As a sculptor of contemporary figuration and modern organic sculpture, Scott Gentry has fashioned his own style in stone and bronze. His pieces combine soft curves and sharp lines that focus the viewer's attention on the energy they emote. Scott began sculpting at the Creative Arts Center in Dallas, Texas. Since then he has explored stone sculpting in Pietrasanta, Italy; San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and Ventura, California. He employs a wide variety of materials, both tactile and elemental. Basalt, marble, alabaster, soapstone, and limestone all make up his repertoire in stone, and some of these pieces are pushed to great expressiveness in bronze as well.
