The Dream of Eurasia. 987 Testimonials

L’artista Omar Galliani padroneggia una tecnica e un linguaggio che attingono dalla grande tradi- zione rinascimentale italiana, che usa in difesa e per conto del disegno italiano, gettando ideali ponti dal presente al passato e dal passato verso il futuro. Non di meno, troviamo la capacità di instaurare un dialogo fra le culture europee ed asiatiche, in una vicendevole scoperta e intesa sul ruolo di catalizzatore dell’opera d’arte. Infatti il suo talento è stato riconosciuto con insigni onorificenze in Italia e in Cina, quali il Cavalie- rato per le Arti e la Cultura, conferitogli nel 2009 dal Presidente Napolitano, e il primo premio alla Biennale di Pechino del 2003, come rappresentante dell’eccellenza del Disegno Italiano. Il progetto è definito “The Dream of Eurasia”, perché vorrà raggiungere, con l’equilibrio fra diffe- renti culture, la «nascita» di una forma nuova e consapevole di un DNA «eurasiatico» che, attraver- so l’immagine di una radice comune, costruisce una catena genetica innestando 500 varianti, che assumono la funzione di monomeri (dal greco “una parte”, molecola in grado di combinarsi con altre molecole) o nucleotidi, quegli elementi che costituiscono il DNA. L’ovale perfetto del viso di Eurasia, protagonista dell’opera di Galliani, rappresenta milioni di volti (la natura comune delle genti), ognuno diverso dall’altro, su cui si radica la colonna portante delle differenti culture, frutto di singole esperienze. Il lasso temporale in cui si svilupperà l’azione è di circa due anni e nascerà a Venezia a partire dal 29 maggio 2013.

L’evoluzione del progetto viene mostrata secondo tre precise traiettorie, ognuna dipendente dalle altre e connessa in una logica di causa ed effetto. L’attività di back office, definita “The Italian Attitude”, viene mostrata e condivisa attraverso una live performance, capace di stimolare la partecipazione attiva del singolo individuo, impegnata nel coinvolgimento di enti privati e istituzioni apparenti alla realtà italiana e nello stesso tempo verso più di 50 ambasciate dei paesi asiatici, quali: Afghanistan, Arabia Saudita, Armenia, Azerbaigian, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Birmania, Brunei, Cambogia, Cina, Cipro, Corea del Nord, Corea del Sud, Egitto, Filippine, Georgia, Giappone, Gior- dania, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israele, Kazakistan, Kirghizistan, Kuwait, Laos, Libano, Malesia, Maldive, Mongolia, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Palestina, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Siria, Sri Lanka, Tagi- kistan, Taiwan, Thailandia, Timor Est, Turchia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen. Attraverso la pubblicazione in tempo reale di documenti, video e foto sulla piattaforma venice- biennale-eurasia2013.org mostreremo l’area del pensiero, della volontà e determinazione nel voler raggiungere l’obiettivo.

Materiali video e fotografici documenteranno la fase di condivisione con i naturali fruitori del messaggio e l’obiettivo di questa fase operativa sarà il coinvolgimento dei 987 testimonial asiatici e italiani, incontrati a Venezia e attraverso le attività social del team Mazzotta. I 987 Testimonial saranno coinvolti nel programma, con una funzione attiva come «testimoni» e soprattutto come collaboratori e consulenti, in un’impostazione open source. Questo processo di lavoro diventa materiale pedagogico e permetterà di costruire un network socia- le e culturale, che avrà l’onere di veicolare l’opera d’arte realizzata dal Maestro Omar Galliani che rappresenta un nuovo «genoma culturale euroasiatico».

Il carattere divulgativo e partecipativo dell’installazione viene presentato nel suo corpus totale solo in maniera virtuale, dinamica e interattiva, dove sarà possibile visualizzare i 250 dittici (simbolicamente i polimeri o polinucleotidi, che compongono la catena del DNA) realizzati su tavola di legno, opere attraverso le quali l’artista tenta di ridisegnare il nuovo genoma culturale dell’uomo euroasiatico. L’installazione prenderà vita con il contributo del territorio e verrà mostrata come work in progress virtuale, utilizzando come “monomeri”o “nucleotidi” le 500 tavole dell’opera «The Dream of Eura- sia » e le immagini di tutti coloro che hanno partecipato al progetto. Sarà proprio la rappresentazione delle differenze il soggetto e il focus del lavoro che si andrà a rea- lizzare, generando un supporto visivo, fatto di unicità definite da infinite caratteristiche, in cui sarà visibile l’aspetto di comune base culturale. Archivio di questa esperienza sarà il catalogo edito dalla Casa Editrice Mazzotta, che verrà pubbli- cato entro il dicembre 2013, e che conterrà la memoria attraverso i testi, le immagini dell’artista al lavoro, gli scatti dei testimonial davanti alle opere e le riprese dell’allestimento dell’installazione finale. The spirit that permeates the project is the desire to highlight the attitude towards cultural exchan- ge that has historically characterised the Mediterranean civilisations, in which cultural differences are seen as values founded on experiences that have developed from common roots. In addition to excellence in the arts, today Italy continues to demonstrate a particular ‘genetic’ abi- lity to communicate by means of trade and the so-called ‘culture of doing’. This is expressed mainly through the business world, which now more than ever constitutes the bearer of our culture and represents the opportunities for Italy’s renewal and progress, permitting firms and individuals to maintain profitable relationships with the East, thus continuing to build on the work of thousands of years, an extensive and shared hybrid form of culture.

The Dream of Eurasia |987 Testimonial | The Italian Attitude is a project created by artist Omar Galliani and directed by Leonardo Rotatori (originators of the project The Other Side of Russia, which in 2011 was awarded the gold medal from President Napolitano) that demonstrates this ‘attitude’, not only through the construction of the monumental work The Dream of Eurasia, but also by show- ing the method used to accomplish it, thus affirming that the Italian ‘genetic memory’ combines creativity with the practical process, beginning with the utopian dream of the birth of an idea and ending with its actual realisation. The impressive programme that describes this project – a work in progress – can be found on the platform venicebiennale-eurasia2013.org, which visibly presents the fundamental aspects of the evolution of Omar Galliani’s work The Dream of Eurasia, cataloguing all the stages necessary for completing this project, which springs from daily work and is recomposed in the global world of communication.

The artist Omar Galliani is the master of a technique and art form that draws on the great Italian- bRenaissance tradition, which he uses to defend and represent Italian drawing, casting an ideal bridge from the present to the past and from the past to the future. Also involved, moreover, is the capacity to establish a dialogue between European and Asian cul- tures in a mutual journey of discovery and understanding, with the artwork in the role of catalyst. In fact, Galiani’s talent has been recognised in the form of distinguished awards, both in Italy and China, such as ‘Knight of Arts and Culture’, conferred in 2009 by President Napolitano, and first prize at the 2003 Beijing Biennale, as a representative of the excellence of Italian drawing. The project has been named The Dream of Eurasia, because, through the balance between different cultures, it aims to achieve the ‘birth’ of a new and conscious form of Eurasian DNA, which, based on the image of a common root, will build a genetic chain grafting 500 variants which will assume the function of monomers (from the Ancient Greek ‘a part’; a molecule capable of combining with other molecules) or nucleotides, the elements that make up DNA.

The perfect oval of the face of Eurasia, the main figure in Galliani’s work, represents the millions of unique faces (the common base of populations) that form the foundation on which the pillar of dif- ferent cultures, the outcome of individual experiences, is supported.The project will develop over a period of about two years, beginning in Venice on 29 May 2013 and evolving along three precise trajectories, each dependent on the other and connected by a relationship of cause and effect. The back office activities, known as The Italian Attitude will be shown and shared in a live performance to stimulate the active participation of each individual, engaged both in involving private Italian firms and institutions, and at the same time including more than 50 Asian embassies, among them: Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Brunei, Cam- bodia, China, Cyprus , North Korea, South Korea, Egypt, the Philippines, Georgia, Japan, Jordan, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldi- ves, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Syria, Sri Lan- ka, Tajikistan, Taiwan, Thailand, East Timor , Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen. Through the real-time publication of documents, videos and photos on the platform venicebiennale-eura- sia2013.org we will show the area of thought, the willingness and the determination to reach the set goal. Video and photographic material will document the sharing phase with the natural users of the message. The objective of this operational phase will be the involvement of 987 Asian and Italian Testimonials who will meet in Venice, and through social activities of the Mazzotta team. The 987 Testimonials will be actively involved in the programme, in particular as collaborators and consultants, in an open-source format.

This work process will become educational material for the construction of a social and cultural network responsible for the diffusion of Omar Galliani’s work of art, which will represent a new ‘Eurasian cultural genome’. The popular and participatory character of the installation will be presented in its entirety only in a virtual, dynamic and interactive format. The 250 diptychs (symbolically, the polymers or polynu- cleotides that make up the DNA chain) are works made on wood panels, in which the artist will attempt to redesign the new cultural genome of the Eurasian individual. The installation will come to life through the Biennale input, and will be shown as a virtual work in progress, using the 500 panels that comprise the artwork The Dream of Eurasia as ‘monomers’ or ‘nucleotides’, along with the images of all the people who have taken part in the project. The representation of individual differences will be the subject and focus of the work in course, ge- nerating a visual support consisting of individual uniqueness defined by infinite characteristics, in which the emergence of a common cultural base will be visible. This experience will be documented in a catalogue published by Edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta before December 2013. The catalogue will contain the project’s history in the form of texts, images of the artist at work, shots of the witnesses in front of the works, and images of the setting-up of the final installation: the reportage of a journey between Europe and Asia by way of their inhabitants.
