The Collection #3
21 June - 10 November 2013
The redisplay of the collection of contemporary art at the 21er Haus focuses on three themes: Freedom – Form – Abstraction juxtaposes works from Austrian post-war modernism with contemporary positions revealing similarities in content and form. A second theme draws attention to the blurring boundaries between Sign – Image – Object and alludes to the structure of reception and how this is translated into language. Finally, Body – Psyche – Performance addresses social standardization and how, since the 1960s, this has crossed over into art.

Schwanzer – West – Zobernig
Five sculptures by Franz West will be mounted on concrete slabs created solely for this purpose by Heimo Zobernig. The scale of the slabs, their materiality and spatial setting unfurl a complex spectrum of meaning when placed in conjunction with Franz West’s work. At the heart of this is the relationship of architectural space to sculpture and to the way it is presented. The base becomes an art form itself and is incorporated into the concept of modernist pavilion architecture, manifesting the relationship between art and architecture. Zobernig thus reflects the historic ideas of Karl Schwanzer’s modernist architecture of the pavilion together with today’s discourse about sculpture.

Barbara Kapusta - They She We Them
In They She We Them Barbara Kapusta presents seven photos. These show thirteen people from the artist’s life and their gazes and gestures, postures and expressions. How they are grouped and configured. How they interact, touch, or not. When they are part of the group or stand apart. How they depend on each other and express themselves – in friendship, collaboration or love. So it is about the broad topic of relationships in which the subjective drowns out the objective completely, everything is associative and is dissolved in the gray area between the communal and the collective, even when one person steps out of the circle and does a solo.
Barbara Kapusta lives and works in Vienna. In 2008 she founded the exhibition space Saprophyt with artist and filmmaker Stephan Lugbauer. Together with artist Katharina Aigner she initiates and organizes video and film programs in diverse contexts and spaces. Recently her work has been shown at 21er Haus, Vienna (2013), Kunstpavillon Innsbruck (2012), Galerie Lisa Ruyter, Vienna (2012), Die Diele, Zurich (2012), Freies Museum Berlin (2012), Unit One Gallery, Beijing (2012), Sigmund Freud Museum Vienna (2011).
