Drawings. Playgrounds, climbing structures, boats, swimming pools and hot tubs serve as platforms or supports for the drawings. Pozzi uses interlocking grids, webs or nets to represent these structures, resulting in a method that wavers between loose fidelity and outright improvisation.
Jeff Bailey Gallery is pleased to present JULIAN POZZI: DRAWINGS.
With the use of a bamboo pen, ink and watercolor, Pozzi creates
intricate weavings of color that depict improvised structures which are
based on outdoor recreational areas and objects.
Playgrounds, climbing structures, boats, swimming pools and hot tubs
serve as platforms or supports for the drawings. Pozzi uses interlocking
grids, webs or nets to represent these structures, resulting in a method
that wavers between loose fidelity and outright improvisation.
The ink and watercolor compositions seem to break down the materiality
of the source imagery, yielding playful yet formal hybrids that defy
easy categorization and invite numerous interpretations.
Julian Pozzi's drawings have been exhibited in several group shows,
including the gallery's inaugural exhibition, Launched, in March of this
year. He co-curated with Ingrid Bromberg Red and Green and Blue at
Artists Space in 2000. Pozzi received an MFA from the California
Institute of the Arts in 1997. He lives in New York.
