Curated by Fulya Erdemci, the 13th Istanbul Biennial, "Mom, am I barbarian?", which borrows its title from poet Lale Muldur's book, will explore the notion of public space as a political forum and focus on the relation of art and literature (poetry). The exhibition aspires to open up a space to rethink the concept of publicness through art and elicit imagination and innovative thought to contribute to social engagement and discussion.

The 13th Istanbul Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and sponsored by Koç Holding, starts on Saturday, 14 September and will be open until Sunday, 20 October. Admission to the biennial exhibitions is free, overlapping with the biennial’s vision to create a public space, reach out to a wider audience, and be accessible to everyone.
Curated by Fulya Erdemci, the 13th Istanbul Biennial, “Mom, am I barbarian?”, which borrows its title from poet Lale Müldür’s book, will explore the notion of public space as a political forum and focus on the relation of art and literature (poetry). With the term “barbarian”, it also signifies the novel languages we need to learn or yet to invent to understand the “other”s and to conceive the world to come. The exhibition aspires to open up a space to rethink the concept of ‘publicness’ through art and elicit imagination and innovative thought to contribute to social engagement and discussion.
The 13th Istanbul Biennial exhibitions can be visited free of charge as of Saturday 14 September at Antrepo no.3 in Tophane, Galata Greek Primary School in Karaköy, ARTER and SALT Beyoğlu on İstiklal Street and 5533 in İMÇ 5th Block.
With the exhibition around the corner, the 13th Istanbul Biennial preparations are continuing at full speed at the exhibition venues. The 13th Istanbul Biennial features 88 artists and artist groups whose work problematize the dichotomies between barbarity and civilisation, nature and culture, the singular and the universal, the subject and the social, and randomness and order, and layer these relations visually to unravel linguistic and intellectual processes together with emotional experiences. Featuring 15 artists, artist collectives, civil society groups and initiatives from Turkey, the 13th Istanbul Biennial is the biennial exhibit with the highest rate of participation from Turkey up to date. The 13th Istanbul Biennial will announce its list of participating artists at the exhibition opening to emphasize the integrity of the exhibition, as opposed to highlighting artists individually.
Fulya Erdemci states in her curator’s text, “In order to challenge the dominant structure in the field of art in public domain, which mainly consists of artists of European and Anglo-Saxon origin—and thus, does not reflect the diversity of the field—we prioritized less-privileged geographies like Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East and Turkey in the selection of artists. We sought to disrupt the existing balances and besides, to create a different type of equilibrium by bringing together pioneering established artists with emerging artists. Alongside a hybridity, which takes geopolitical diversity into account, the exhibition also aimed for a historical aperture between the present day and the 60s and 70s. These decades also witnessed artists developing new artistic practices challenging urban transformation and gentrification processes and the cultivating of the most alternative and conceptual forms of art in public domain. The most significant common denominator between the 60s-70s and the present day is the quest for ‘another world’.
Through exploring the relationship between literature (particularly poetry) and art, the exhibition focuses on new, yet to be invented languages. Poetry, which marks the outermost limits of language in terms of form and meaning, allows us a glimpse at the possibility of another world. It breaches the intricate schemes of the system we are confined to. The exhibition aims to present poetry (and along the same line, music) as an interface between the personal, and the public and political. Layering the dichotomies it strives to challenge visually, it presents artistic practices that unravel linguistic and intellectual processes together with emotional experiences.”

Young visitors to the biennial will gain an enhanced understanding of contemporary art and exhibitions, thanks to a project realized with the cooperation of İKSV and Pace Children’s Arts Center with the support of
Koç Holding. The biennial is happy to offer special programme for the duration of the exhibition that is intended to help them get acquainted with basic artistic terms and concepts. While strolling through the venues, they will talk about and put into practice what they have learned. The youth educational programme will be participated by two artists for the first time this year. Mere Phantoms (Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson) will aim at observing the relationship and interactions between the audience and performer through paper cut graffiti figures, sketches, videos and animations.
The youth educational programme will be held from 17 September until the end of the biennial, six days a week in Antrepo no.3 for the age groups of 8-11, 12-14 and 15-18.
