“Painting with history in a room filled with men with funny names 2”

In the summer of the year 2013 I returned to my hometown Bangkok, Thailand in order to reconnect with my twin brother, Korapat. We haven’t really talked or seen each other in two years. Pat (short for Korapat), seems to still be a little melancholic from his past relationship. I on the other hand, was pretty stressed about coming up with a new body of work for my solo show at Bill Brady KC Gallery.

Together we decided to embark on a journey in the hope of solving our respective problems and tightening our bond.It was a long and hard journey, both physically and mentally, but in the end we reached our final destination: Wat Rong Khun or what is nicknamed by foreigners in our country as “The White Temple.”

The White Temple was designed and built by the famed Thai artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. It was designed in 1997 but remains unfinished today. The White Temple is situated in Chiangrai, a relatively remote province in Northern Thailand that maintains its natural beauty and is relatively untouched. Visiting the White Temple was an extremely interesting experience and without doubt has left a lasting impression on me - I encourage everyone, if you have the chance to visit it.

The body of paintings shown is a reflection of my experience of visiting the White Temple. This body of work would not exist but for the work of artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and I would like to take this moment to thank him. In the tradition of Thai Modern Art, the famous quote by Silpa Bhirasi, an Italian Sculptor who came to Thailand in the year 1927 to teach art comes to mind – “Life is short, Art is long” (Ars Longa Vita Brevis). He is considered the father of Thai Modernism. I would like to thank and honor him in this moment.

This is the first collaborative body of work by Korakrit Arunanondchai and his twin Korapat Arunanondchai.

Also as part of the Exhibition “Painting with history in a room filled with men with funny names 2” Korakrit is releasing a special project with the .PSDShow called “All shapes and forms that I used to make Paintings, clothing and installation from the year 2006-2011.” Here is the press release for that:

“From the year 2006 up until 2011, I generated a series of works that consisted of different shapes and forms that originated from me thinking about traditional Thai patterns and automatic drawing techniques. This series of shapes and forms were used as visual building blocks to construct most of my artwork during the years 2006-2011. The shapes lend themselves really well to the process of screenprinting and Photoshop. In lieu of a quote I read from the autobiography of the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat about building aesthetics and sharing them amongst people, I want to also make available this series of shapes and forms that I made over those years, free of any copyright or authorship. If anyone could make use of these Photoshop files in any way shape or form it would make me really happy. “
