23 Million Years of Foreplay by Inam Yong

31.10.2003 - 23.11.2003

Stereotypes of genders are still very common in our city of the twenty-first century but contemporary art would always like to remind us our shortcomings.

From October 31 to November 23, 2003 Para/Site Art Space proudly present at its Sheung Wan premises the dual solo exhibitions of Rita Hui and Inam Yong whose art explores the way how we look at different genders and our relationships with others.

Rita Hui, a local video artist who has her video work screened internationally will exhibit her latest work Displacement ab-ject in form of installation of four monitors of different size. Inspired by an intimate relationship with an imagined woman of water who passed away, Hui produced video images of the death of the woman and close-ups of the body to explore the meaning of memory, self and the perception of woman images.

The Hong Kong-born but San Francisco-based Inam Yong has been working with the media of video, sculpture and installation. His previous work has exhibited the sadness of the fall of heroism. His new work at Para/Site, 23 Million Years of Foreplay, was conceived out his fascination of Kashmir Shivaism, an ancient Hindu philosophy in which the god Shiva stands beyond the limits of sex to be described He, She or It. From his idea of Shivaism, he builds a micro-cosmology out of foam-boards and masking tapes to reflect our inherent spiritual possibility.

Opening Friday, October 31, 6-8pm

The artists will also talk about the projects to the public on Saturday, November 1 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Para/Site Art Space is financially supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and its patrons.

Para/Site Art Space, Ground Floor, 2 Po Yan Street (enter from 224 Hollywood Road), Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. Gallery hours: 12-7pm (Wed.- Sun.), closed on public holidays.
