The exhibition presents an exceptional opportunity to view auto self-portraits produced from the 1970's to the present, including large format photograms, a unique bookwork and intimate images from his important early Renais - sense series, which questioned the relationship between gender and identity. One of the leading representatives of body art and performance, his work is notable for its experimental use of photography, in particular Polaroid.
Ulay (b. 1943, Solingen, Germany) lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 2000 a retrospective of his work was held at de Appel, Amsterdam. He made many works in collaboration with artist Marina Abromavic, their separation marked by the famous Great Wall Walk performance in China, 1988. Their collaborative exhibitions and performances have been shown at an array of galleries and museums including MOMA, NY (2010), Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1998), Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands (1997), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1995), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1990), San Francisco Art Institute, CA (1989), Documenta 6 (1977), 7 (1982) & 8, Kassel (1988), Tate, London (1987), The New Museum, New York (1986), ICA, Boston, Massachusetts (1984), Bienalle de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo (1981), De Appel, Amsterdam (1978), Brooklyn Museum, New York (1978) and the Biennale di Venezia, Italy (1976). In 2013 he will be included in exhibitions at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz, and Salon Dahlmann, Berlin.
