C'est comme Être

In the first video frames two women appear in a confined mirrored parlour applying cream to their face and arms. As the camera moves around the room partially unveiling the space they are inhabiting, their gestures take on a tone of erotic and sinister meanings combined. Multiplied and refracted by glimpses of the women through mirrors, they appear and disappear and merge through disguise and camouflage. As such, images of beauty become one of terror and opulence, mutation and decoration, elegance and fear. The twins explore the characteristics of identity and, with insect-like movements, become one and another in a kaleidoscope of skin designs expressing the erotics and politics of contemporary fears. They have become here terrorists of beauty.

Merging language and image, the artists will produce a series of wall drawings reflecting on mutation and hallucination.

Patricia & Marie-France Martin are identical twins from Switzerland. They live and work in Brussels. Their practice encompasses a variety of medium, from photography, video and sound tracks to performance, text and drawing. They have shown internationally, including in the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris and the Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris.
