comunicato stampa

Murat Germen, regarded as one of the most important representatives of contemporary photography in Turkey, is initiating a discussion along his oeuvre with two major events. As the artist’s monographic book will be introduced to art lovers with a launch at Istanbul Modern on 25th of October 2013, Germen’s latest works will be exhibited under the “Facsimile-v2” title at C.A.M. Gallery on 31st of October 2013.

Edited by curator and art historian Dr. Necmi Sönmez, Murat Germen’s book is titled “New Turkey”. The main thesis of the book, which covers the series that the artist has created since 2000, is the artist’s authentic contemporary interpretation he captured through his photographs. In addition to two essays by Murathan Mungan, one of the most effective Turkish writers of our time, and Necmi Sönmez, who works at Lepsien Foundation Düsseldorf as well as Borusan Contemporary Istanbul; the book also includes and interview of Barbara Hofmann-Johnson, the curator of Photographische Sammlung Köln, with the artist besides Germen’s own notes on his works. Designed by Yesim Demir and published bilingually in Turkish and English, the book is Murat Germen’s first monograph.

An organic bond between New Turkey’s photographer Murat Germen’s book and his latest works stands out. The artist, who exhibited challenging visual experimentations with his “Muta-morphosis” series, continues his artistic practice on urban photography in his recent works. Both Muta-morphosis and Facsimile series focus on the perpetual transformation of the urban scenes. While the older series, i.e. Muta-morphosis, maximizes the urban content by shrinking very long panoramic photos into a photographic frame with a typical ratio; Facsimile on the contrary, extends certain parts of cities to attract attention to particular dynamics among various urban components.

It is not a coincidence to see Murat Germen focus on Turkey’s “present time”. Regardless of the subject, perspective or technique; the artist handles the cultural, economic and social geography shaped by New Turkey in such unexpected ways that his works forms a “personalized” documentary approach, that is difficult to comprehend at first glance.
