From Diaros Lop to Paroid Sol. The artist's works revolve around questioning the perception of surfaces and are the expression of a constant search for depth in the surface.
For his artistic creations, David Berweger draws on the creative interplay between real and illusionist space. His works revolve around questioning the perception of surfaces and are the expression of a constant search for depth in the surface. In ever new experimental arrangements, the artist explores the creation of a sense of depth and sculpture in only two dimensions. His studio is like a scientific laboratory in which he assesses materials like ash, wood, plaster or paper for their essential properties, so that he can make full use of their varied potential within the artistic process. A distinctive feature of Berweger’s work is the way he deals with a geometric form vocabulary, whose precision and strictness is repeatedly broken by deliberate interventions. For example, he experiments with colour pigments on floor surfaces, whereby what are initially geometric forms are blurred by the action of water and dissolve away. In his work hommage to the snowball (2012), he transfers the volatile base material into a temporarily solid form in an expressive way: A cuboid made of 1600 litres of ash initially appears like a wall of concrete, before it crumbles under its own weight. By interweaving solidly joined, clearly contoured forms and their change into unstable, amorphous entities, two opposites overlap, which are reminiscent of artistic paragons: on the one hand, of Minimal art with its clear, sober formal vocabulary, and on the other, of arte povera with its simple, often ephemeral materials. Many of the artist’s works have the potential for change; they are not solidly fixed works, but rather gestures that unfold in space and time.
