An Exhibition of the work of Tom Sachs
at Printed Matter, Inc.
Printed Matter is very pleased to announce Holiday Spectacular, an
installation of work by Tom Sachs. The exhibition opens with a reception
on Saturday, November 22, 2003, from 6 to 8 PM, and continues through
December 23, 2003. Showcasing a selection of Official Tom Sachs
merchandise and artworks from his recent Nutsy's installation at the
Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, the exhibition will also transform Printed
Matter into a giant listening booth for the Holiday Season. Two Califone
turntables and selections of Tom Sachs' Classic Vinyl - classic and rare
Reggae and Dub records - will be set up for visitors to Printed Matter to
play while they see the show. On opening night, Selector Ras Kush and
Selector Joe Hova will spin Dub music on the infamous Tom Sachs Guru Yard
Style Sound system.
Tom Sachs is an artist whose work operates on the do-it-yourself principle
of bricolage. His Nutsy's installation, originally commissioned by the
Bohen Foundation, New York and re-created for the Deutsche Guggenheim this
past summer, used foam core, hot glue, plywood, steel, scavenged street
lumber, asphalt, a radar gun, liquor, turntables and LPs, to build a
4,000-square-foot pavilion hosting, among other feats of down home
engineering, a 1:25 scale model of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation and a
homemade, fully operational McDonald's. Viewer-operated remote-control
cars sped through this expertly hand-crafted universe on an elevated
racetrack - through a model ghetto and modernist art park with mandatory
stops along the way at the bong-hit station and piss station.
Nutsy's - and Sachs' work in general - is deeply, if ambivalently, engaged
with questions of mass production and consumption. By playing the
resourcefulness of bricolage off of the grandiosity of modernism and the
banality of consumer culture, he simultaneously critiques, embraces and
re-invents the world. This world, like the world from which it is
maniacally spun off, is governed by its own set of rules and esthetic
criteria. The Nutsy's Seal of Approval is Tom Sachs' boundary-blurring
brand, and for the holiday season Printed Matter is offering Nutsy's
Approved selections from our inventory along with everything you need to
participate in the official Nutsy's Holiday Spectacular: sharpies,
lighters, patches, stickers, tape, wrapping paper, posters, post cards and
even an official, limited edition Nutsy's remote control racecar.
Support for this exhibition and catalogue have been generously provided
from Mickey and Janice Cartin, and Furthmore: A Program of the J.M. Kaplan
Fund.
