Wheels and Longarms
A two-gallery exhibition of new paintings

Ramis Barquet is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Ray Smith, held concurrently at our 57th Street and Chelsea galleries.

Wheels and Longarms continues Smith’s renewal and departure from earlier themes in his prolific career. This two-gallery exhibition is centered on three recurrent motifs that appear in the work of the past two years: paintings inspired by vintage Ferrari automobiles, tondo paintings depicting “rotating” timepieces and rifles (longarms). Smith’s investigations of manipulated photography, digital image representation and the continuity of painting fuel these bodies of work.

The Fuller Building gallery will showcase a 24-foot long mural of a blue 1962 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) Ferrari, as well as other works related to the automobile. In Chelsea, the exhibition will include a mural painting on wood panels of a rifle cabinet and those of clocks and watches depicted in rotation, or dissolving into anamorphic shapes.

Wheels and Longarms will coincide with the publication of Empire, a fully illustrated catalogue (essay by Edward Leffingwell) that brings together Smith’s photographic and painted works of the past two years.

Ray Smith was born in Texas in 1959. Since the early 80’s, his work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe Japan and America in major galleries and institutions. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, Texas and the Babilonia Wilner Foundation, Berkeley, CA (both 2002). He divides his time between New York City and Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Opening reception: Saturday, November 22, 6-8
