The works of Ci Kim in Myself offer a freshness and innocence with an unadulterated and very personal reflection of the artist's life and desires, and serve to illuminate his ongoing craving for interaction between artist and viewer.
MYSELF
UNION PROJECTS announces a solo exhibition of works by Ci Kim, the
Korean-based artist, businessman and contemporary art collector.
Kim's practice evolves from his various conceptions and interpretations of
commercial culture and reflect his dual status as an entrepreneur and artist.
However the diversity of themes and media he employs successfully transcend
the realm of pop art. Since his relatively nascent identity as an artist is
still unfamiliar, Myself reflects Kim's struggles with a divided self and his
efforts to establish an unfixed, inclusive identity.
Dreams, self-analysis and the external communication of shifting internal
realities are significant recurring topics for Kim. In addition, his work
displays a keenness to interact with viewers both symbolically and more
literally.
Image Replica', 2003 a mirror installation, investigates issues surrounding
image reproduction (originally raised in Walter Benjamin's critical
discussions) and the role of the viewer. Photographs, the first layer of
replication, are hung facing a mirror creating a duplication of a
reproduction, as well as a dual presentation of the image. The mirror
metaphorically reflects our contemporary age of simulacrum, where the original
is overcome by its multiple representations and, at the same time, affects the
viewers' spatial experience and perception. Other pieces on display employ
language as a direct tool for communication, or rely on elements that hold a
place in the universal subconscious, thereby prompting a personal response
from each visitor.
The works of Ci Kim in Myself offer a freshness and innocence with an
unadulterated and very personal reflection of the artist's life and desires,
and serve to illuminate his ongoing craving for interaction between artist and
viewer
