The artworks embraces gestural-expressive, colourful painting and spans along its own mediatic edges to reach spontaneous loopholes in the dominant matrix of imperative self-invention and self-identity.
The new exhibition format Raum D [Space D] at the homonymous exhibition space at the basement floor of Künstlerhaus KM– shows, starting in 2014, different positions in contemporary art production of broad Styrian provenance. The series "Starting from Hystyria", which is always accompanied by a fanzine, begins with the artist ONKEL SUSI.
The artwork of ONKEL SUSI (born in Styria, lives in Vienna) embraces gestural-expressive, colourful painting and spans along its own mediatic edges to reach spontaneous loopholes in the dominant matrix of imperative self-invention and self-identity. At high velocity he juggles with discriminabilities between rendered depictions of a momentary self and the role of the painter or the potentialities of the medium. ONKEL SUSI draws on an explosive pictorial language with multifaceted structures that gives rise to associations with (self-)portraits, children’s drawings, or certain examples of Neo-Expressionism, yet without denying their processual character, which encourages the paintings to also take on the form of sculptural arrangements at any given time.
