The exhibition presents eight contemporary Estonian artists whose work explores different ways to portray a body. The display offers emblematic works of the 1990s. Their approach to the body ranges from experiencing psychic tensions to sexuality and the developing difficulties of self-identity. The participants include both younger artists and those whose oeuvre has already attracted international acclaim.

Video artist Ene-Liis Semper (*1969) stands out among the latter. In recent years she has taken part in many important international exhibitions, often upon invitation, and was also the artist of the Estonian exposition at the 49th Venice art biennial. Semper's works are emotional and dramatic, with her acting as a model for her own work.

Peeter Laurits (* 1962) has studied photography in New York, being the first to introduce aggressive social sphere into Estonian photography. In his later work, Laurits has examined the modifications of Christian mythology in the course of time.

Mark Raidpere (*1975) has acquired the role of a Christian martyr and saint. His series of agony-filled self-photographs reveals stigmata on the author's body. (Photo 2: Io,1997, Digital Print, 100 x 73 cm)

The work of Liina Siib (*1963), one of the most prominent photographers in Estonia today, investigates the development of morality and the secret boundaries between the world of children and adults. (Photo 3: From the Series Hypnosis, 1999, Digital Print, 180 x 120 cm)

Ly Lestberg's (*1965) nude photographs totally abandon a strictly male or female identity, allowing both to exist. (Photo 1: Insomnia, 1999, Dinoprint 4 x (132 x 230 cm))

Via a decadent and subtle stylising, the androgynous situation continues in the photos of the young talented jewellery artist Tanel Veenre (* 1977).

Mare Tralla (*1967) approaches the body from a clearly feminist position, providing discarded clothes with love stories with invented protagonists, the previous owners of the said items.

Margot Kask's (*1974) series of photographs is dreamy and gentle, focusing on the wordless dialogue between mother and child.
