Experiments in Master and Servant at Gallery Neubacher
Toronto (2 December 2003) Â Gallery Neubacher announces today the opening of
obedience featuring new work by artist, John Smialek. Using volatile,
molten wax and encaustic techniques, Smialek seeks obedience from the
uncontrollable, yielding works of absolute beauty and extreme intelligence.
Working primarily in monochromatic washes of color, Smialek's layered wax
achieves depth, richness and intense luminosity. It all starts with molten
wax at a dangerous 300 degrees, which grants defining urgency to the
creation process. The fluid, uncontrollable nature of wax needs harnessing
and from its malleable beginnings Smialek creates dissonance. He demands
the wax obey through rigid control, harnessed in service of aesthetic
purpose.
Obedience is achieved through strict planning and requisite discipline.
Utilizing highly deliberate systems of graphing and mathematics, Smialek
meticulously lays out his work in perfect '/8 scale. Often the layout is
planned to a significant piece of music helping to establish the piece's
tone.
Smialek's sleek minimalist works boldly capture transition from one state to
the next tempered with deep desire to control the uncontrollable. It is the
interplay between the essential quality of Smialek's material and the
artist's need to impose purpose that results in an obedient
near-collaboration between artist and material.
