Drawing Conclusions II

NYArts Gallery, New York

Work by Artist-Writers. The diptychs by artist-writers in 'Drawing Conclusions II' displays dual facets of expression, enabling viewers to get a more complete picture of creators' vision. In opposition to the standard way of relating text and image, with the artist's statement or illustration, the non-linear correlations between writing and art here give viewers a more poly-dimensional comprehension.

The diptychs by artist-writers in "Drawing Conclusions II" displays dual facets of expression, enabling viewers to get a more complete picture of creators' vision. In opposition to the standard way of relating text and image, with the artist's statement or illustration, the non-linear correlations between writing and art here give viewers a more poly-dimensional comprehension.

Toward the end of the Modern Era, strictly endorsing abstraction, mid-century American art criticism leveraged itself over contemporary art. A variety of artistic styles went largely unrecognized for at least a decade. The critical endeavors on view in this exhibition transcend the schism created between written ideas and artistic form. In addition to finding common ground between art and literature, this event merges the practice of art and art criticism that typically operate in juxtaposition to one another.

"An understanding of the ways in which image, frame, caption, and text routinely conspire together to present an inevitability about the objective world allows us to re-order and reconstruct the relationship between these components, and thereby to contribute to the creation of an infra-reflexive text which crosses over between the visual and verbal domains." -- Elizabeth Chaplain, Sociology and Visual Representation>
