Sebastien Bourdon

Alte Pinakothek, Munich

Hot spot Rome - Bourdon's Munich "Lime Kiln". The exhibition points out references and distinctive features, as well as the position this unusual baroque painting holds within the Master's oeuvre as a whole.

comunicato stampa

Sébastien Bourdon was a versatile and successful painter of the French Baroque period, already being highly praised by Joachim von Sandrart in the 17th century. His early masterpiece »A Roman Lime Kiln«, probably painted around 1637 in Rome, is considered one of the key works in the department of French painting in the Alte Pinakothek. The everyday subject captured for the viewer, however, is only realistic at first glance. Lime is being burnt and sold close to famous monuments in Rome. Beggars and day-labourers are relaxing or passing the time of day playing games. But is it really possible to sit on burnt lime – as can be seen here – without being injured? Some time ago doubts arose as to whether this really does depict a lime kiln or not. Are these doubts justified?

How closely does Bourdon’s genre painting keep to historical reality? The exhibition seeks answers to these questions. Pictures by predecessors and contemporaries as well as other works by the artist, including carefully selected loans, invite comparisons and illustrate the stimuli, points of reference and distinctive features, as well as the position this unusual painting holds within the Master’s œuvre as a whole.
