An accomplished artist who produced a body of visual work in both Europe and Mexico where experimentation allowed her to continually establish a personal dialogue with the political situation of the moment. She was a war photographer, she appropriated the avant-garde, experimental ideas of the 1930s and integrated them into her work.
To present the photographic oeuvre of Kati Horna (Budapest, 1912–Mexico City, 2000) is to reexamine a vast body of work made over more than sixty years by an artist who crossed over multiple territories, which are reflected in her varied visual practice.
The cosmopolitanism that defines Horna’s work is inseparable from the turbulent times in which she lived: the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the outbreak of World War I were events that marked her childhood and that forced her to leave Budapest, and then Berlin, in order to settle in Paris; the Spanish Civil War led her to travel around Republican Spain; World War II signaled her definitive exile to Mexico, her adopted country.

She was a war photographer, she appropriated the avant-garde, experimental ideas of the 1930s and integrated them into her work, and she developed an original, intimate style in chronicles and photojournalism.
Today, for the first time, the diverse nature of her work can be seen, much of it unpublished or in limited circulation. Museo Amparo is proud to be part of this recovery project, which allows us to reassess this photographer and place her within the art of the 20th century.

The temporary exhibitions have a predominant part in Museo Amparo’s program, since one of its goals is to present Mexican and international art in all its diversity, in its ancient as well as in its most recent manifestations. This, with the purposes of expanding the horizon of the always-changing notion of art, and of bringing the public closer to a multiplicity of sensible expressions. Therefore, Museo Amparo offers a variety of temporary national and international exhibitions, giving room also to curatorial proposals from researchers who cast innovative gazes upon art and cultural manifestations.
In over twenty-two years of endeavors, the Museo Amparo has accomplished more than 130 exhibitions addressing many topics and varied languages of art. The exhibitions have allowed our visitors to appreciate objects and experiences such as: archaeology, historical themes, photography, textiles, architecture, design, ceramics, engraving, performance and other media. Besides showing Mexican art, the Museo Amparo has brought its visitors in contact with past and present cultural expressions from Austria, Iran, Israel, Japan, Peru, Poland, among other countries.
