Art Resources Transfer is pleased to present Angelo Filomeno's recent explorations of alchemy as both an historical subject and as a Jungian symbol of transformative psychoanalysis. This alchemic inspiration is evident in works which, despite their disparity in imagery and form, all document the dramatic journey of creation and discovery.
Art Resources Transfer is pleased to present Angelo Filomeno's recent explorations of alchemy as both an historical subject and as a Jungian symbol of transformative psychoanalysis. This alchemic inspiration is evident in works which, despite their disparity in imagery and form, all document the dramatic journey of creation and discovery.
A series of drawings manipulate anthracite dust into patterns. The dust is fixed into place once they have achieved delicate patterns that resemble shadows of the artist's movements during the act of creation.
Frozen movement is also the theme of Filomeno's sculptures in which dead birds and fish are sealed in jars. The creatures float, eternally, in olive oil in conformity with the culinary traditions of southern Italy, Filomeno's birthplace. The recipes used by the artist's aunts and mother for preserving fowl and fish as food are here applied as an artistic practice.
The fish and fowl sculptures also serve as the subject of a series of gelatin silver prints which, because they are processed directly form color transparencies, appear as haunting x-rays. The once living animals fulfill their mystical destinies.
Filomeno's Italian roots are also apparent in a series of photographs of the inside of the deep caves that are located near his birthplace. A single brilliant spot within a vast black field marks the caves' opening from a great distance. These mysterious images are also represented in video format. In this instance, the constant motion of the sky is revealed through the aperture of the cave, once again the alchemical mixture of opposites - dark and light, eternal and ephemeral, coexist.

*The word HURQUALIA was created by the 20th Century Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi for an orchestral piece which he subtitled Un regno differente (A different realm). The underlying philosophical belief of Scelsi was from the sound of one note many variations come as the sound travels through space. From a single note unlimited possibilities occur.
