Headpieces for Peace. It's a decidedly personal project for the artist, daughter of Jewish parents raised in a mostly Catholic South American country. This sense of difference informs her work in a playfully provocative way.
FIAF celebrates fashion with Headpieces for Peace by award-winning multimedia artist Jessica Sofia Mitrani.
Originally commissioned by the fashion collective threeASFOUR for their exhibition Insalaam Inshalom shown in Tel Aviv in 2011, the installation presents a wry examination of fashion and feminism, two themes central to Mitrani’s work.
Winner of the 2012 A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF) Grand Prix, this short video confronts serious themes in a quirky and humorous way.
For the first time in New York, see this video along with the 11 headpieces made from printed fabric designed by threeASFOUR.
About Jessica Sofia Mitrani
A Colombian-born, New York-based visual artist, Jessica Sofia Mitrani is concerned with the social and aesthetic construction of the feminine and the ways in which these forces shape female identity. Her art traverses several mediums, from performance and sculpture to film and video, and avoids trite generalities and curt assumptions. Even when facing complex political issues such as the crisis in the Middle East, Mitrani maintains her idiosyncratic sense of fun and fantasy.
