The works of Patrizia Guerresi Maimouna will be seen for the first time in Atlanta in the shows: Under Different Circumstances at the Comtemporary Arts Center, and The Light Signs at the Momus Gallery, curated by Lisa Kurzner.

At the Contemporary Arts Center she will be showing an installation of 21 terracotta pieces in the form of a carpet together with two large-scale color photos from the video The Virgin of the Rocks, that shows a veiled feminine figure that try ,with an endless repeated gesture of the hand, to remove the veil, but she never uncover.

In the show The Light Signs at the Momus Gallery she will be exhibiting a group of photos and a black resin sculpture that are among the most recent of her works. Luminous white stripes and dots mark, as though indicating some ethnic group, the face, hands, and feet of a woman veiled in black. To accompany these photos there will be shown a video titled Da'irat which, in Arabic, means circle. In the video the same veiled woman seen in the photos mimes and repeats imaginary circles with her eyes, her hands, and her feet. Each sequence is interrupted by black intervals on the screen almost as though to mark the infinite time of the images. The video ends with the same veiled woman, this time, however, wrapped in a long mantle which makes her seem extremely tall. She stands in a great park as though to indicate the mysterious, inscrutable, and sacred spirit of the Great Mother.
Liza Kurzner writes in her catalog essay: ''Patrizia Guerresi is an Italian artist who, like Hwangbo, draws upon personal cultural references to inform her work. A sculptor who has made multimedia installations for over 20 years, Guerresi here presents terracotta floor sculptures together with an installation of the video stills from her work,
'The Virgin of the Rock' (1999). The clay floor pieces are models of Islamic prayer rugs Guerresi has incised with traditional Islamic abstract patterns. Centrally placed to interrupt the decorative patterning, the artist's soft footprint is visible on each carpet. Thus, the human form forbidden to be represented in Islamic art , is now present, both as a cipher for the artist and the fusion of Eastern and Western cultural views. Her veiled figures are as much archetypes of a Western idea of Islam as much as they are autobiographical. Guerresi, who converted to Islam upon her marriage, mingles multicultural references in all her work, both representational and abstract.'
