PHotoEspaña 2014, the 17th edition of this international Festival of photography and visual arts, will run from 4 June to 27 July 2014, with 108 exhibitions of work by 440 artists, 317 of whom are Spanish and the other 123 of 36 different nationalities.

Madrid, Alcalá de Henares, Alcobendas, Getafe, Cuenca y Zaragoza will be the venues for the Festival, which this year will be focussing on Spanish photography.
Last March, the Council of Ministers awarded PHotoEspaña the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts. The award is a tribute to all the administrations, museums, art centres, galleries, foundations, companies, photographers and cities whose joint efforts and collective commitment year after year ensure the Festival’s success. The award comes at a time when PHotoEspaña is embarking on a new stage in its career. After 17 years, the festival is adopting a different perspective, embracing a whole range of themes and names with a view to providing a plural, multifaceted view of photography. Over the next three years, the Festival programme will be focussing on specific geographical areas, in order to ensure a broader survey of local developments in photography and showcase their force and energy.

PHE14 will explore the visual arts in Spain over the whole of the twentieth century to the present day, even taking in part of the nineteenth century, with a view to showcasing their richness and sheer variety. The programme seeks to give greater coverage to well-known photographers, but also to highlight the work of younger, less-known artists. It aims to surprise, to reappraise the work of certain groups and movements, and to highlight the photography of artists whose careers deserve to be more widely known. By means of this broad programme of exhibitions, PHotoEspaña looks at the past, the present and the likely future, at the native, constantly side by side with the international, at well-known names alongside others that were hitherto largely unknown. It offers a major visual reflection on Spain as the meeting point for a variety of different approaches, creating a lively, organic self-portrait.
