Erections Pointing at Stars and Angels

"This is what you get when you fuck the moon..." Jon Pylypchuk, 2004

"All of this may sound unrealistically theatrical, but it resonates in a world sometimes so scarily loony you don't know whether to laugh or cry."
Ken Johnson, New York Times , 21 February 2003.

For his first solo show in London, Los Angeles based artist Jon Pylypchuk will present three new large-scale sculptures, three mixed media paintings and a series of collage works on paper.

The largest sculpture 'Hey, don't fuck with the pipsqueak! ' features a dog wearing boxing gloves, punching a tiger in a bid to protect an injured cat from this furry fiend. The sculpture is composed from crude materials - scrap wood, pieces of fabric (velvet, t-shirts, socks and fake fur), together with glitter and copious amounts of wood glue. One of the paintings relates directly to the sculpture, which is the first time Pylypchuk has directly linked a sculpture and a painting. A second sculpture 'Erections pointing at stars and angels' features two angels suspended above three cats, one standing and two lying down, all pointing at the angels with their erect penises. The third sculpture includes a horse with a cat standing on a table, which shelters a similar feline creature underneath. The conversation between the horse and the sitting cat is interrupted by the whiskered deviant on the table who casually pees on his friend below.

The drawings include Pylypchuk's familiar written notes which he equates to "whispering in someone's ear", but appear as hand written texts near the various characters: "Fuck everyone for dinner....", "I will cool your wounds..." "Let's just try and keep you alive..."

Born in Canada (1972) Pylypchuk was a founding member of the Winnipeg collective, The Royal Art Lodge. Museum shows include 'Snapshot: New Art from Los Angeles,' at UCLA Hammer, Los Angeles (2001) and in the currently touring show "Royal Art Lodge: Ask the Dust", The Drawing Center, New York (2003). Solo shows include China Art Objects, Los Angeles (2002); Friedrich Petzel, New York (2003); and Tomio Koyama, Tokyo (2003).
