Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) presents a solo exhibition of work by British illustrator Tom Frost. The Wild Collection opens in YSP’s Garden Gallery on 21 June and continues to 7 September 2014.
Frost’s beautifully evocative and nostalgic work reflects the young artist’s passionate interest in vintage art and memorabilia – including old matchboxes, tin toys, folk art and children’s books – and often features familiar animals such as pelicans, owls and foxes.
For The Wild Collection, Frost has taken inspiration from YSP’s varied wildlife and historic landscape to create charming new works. Using YSP’s bees and their honey; the Park’s infamous sheep and Highland cattle; along with butterflies, fish, leaves and beetles, Tom has created limited edition screen prints, marquetry and wooden toys – all of which are available to buy.
The Garden Gallery exhibition highlights the joy of getting out into nature, studying it, and collecting specimens to keep, enjoy and preserve. Visitors are transported to a biology classroom, or a naturalist’s study, with works such as old schools charts, matchboxes containing foraged finds, collector’s cards and stamps, made from materials including plywood, vintage meccano and acrylic paint.
Frost, originally from Bristol, studied Illustration at Falmouth College of Art and graduated in 2001. He currently works as a freelance illustrator and printmaker in South Wales. In a recent collaboration, Frost designed the labels for bottles in the Farmhouse range of Perry’s Cider – a family run company in Somerset – based on his Birds of the British Isles stamp designs. Frost’s bottles of Perry’s Cider are currently being stocked in the YSP restaurant.
Alongside an exclusive YSP limited edition screen print, produced by Jealous Print Studio, London, a range of associated merchandise, including a tote bag and a pair of mugs, accompanies the exhibition.
In recent years, YSP has led successful exhibitions with some of the UK’s best-known artists and designers including Rob Ryan, Donna Wilson, Mark Hearld and Angie Lewin.
YSP Shop showcases original work by international artists and contemporary designers and makers. The shop was awarded the title of Best Independent Retailer of the Year at the 2012 and 2013 Northern Designs Awards.
