Jacques Sonck

Fort Napoleon, Ostend

The Belgian beach town Ostend invited GALLERY FIFTY ONE to curate the summer exhibition 2014 at the monumental Fort Napoleon. The result speaks for itself: under the name ’Encounters’ there will be more than 50 black-and-white portraits on show made by the Belgian photographer Jacques Sonck (1949).

'Encounters' refers to sudden and ephemerical meetings, which are distinctive for the work of Jacques Sonck since 1975. His images can best described as penetrating street or studio portraits of eccentric individuals from all walks of life, made in his home country. It is the unusual, the abnormal that is being captured by Soncks eye without any ridicule. Often it are characters who stand out for their odd behavior, appearance or clothing. Sonck approaches these exceptional personages in a discreet and empathetic manner, allowing them to be portrayed favorably.
Sonck himself is inspired by the pre-war anthropological portraits of the German August Sander (1876-1964). Often his work is compared to that of the American Diane Arbus (1923-1971) world known for her portraits of people in the marge.

In 2015 GALLERY FIFTY ONE will celebrate its 15th anniversary. During this period the gallery has earned a renowned reputation far beyond the borders. The gallery represents Sonck since 2011 and included his portraits already in various group exhibitions and on international fairs like Paris Photo (Paris) and AiPAD Photography Show (New York).
These impressive portraits of individuals, which Sonck made over the last 30 years in Belgium, will leave no one indifferent.

The city of Ostend and GALLERY FIFTY ONE cordially invite you to the opening of "Encounters" which takes place on Wednesday, June 25th form 7.30 pm at Fort Napoleon Ostend.
