Map. Digital renderings, hand drawn pieces, and to-scale models by AUB second year Architecture students.
Music Architecture Poole [MAP] is an annual exhibition originally based at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, Dorset, UK and now also at AUB. The project involves AUB second year Architecture students, inviting them to consider the unique space of Poole within the context of themes inspired by the arts culture of the Lighthouse, a Music School and Future Scenarios in Architecture for Poole as a locality.
“Map as a description is used in many connotations and in Architecture the idiom of mapping/to map is also a method of detailing how journeys, events and phenomena, both individual and collective are recorded, dated, analysed and reflected upon. When we think of a Map in the traditional sense this also allows the ideals and virtues of travel, experiences and discovery to unfold with potential to explore and in some cases create new maps of territories and adventures yet uncharted, or drafted. The Map clarifies through drawings, images and coding the voyages we embark upon in time, space, and place”. Channa Vithana, Senior Lecturer, AUB BA (Hons) Architecture.
SPACES
Located on the central south coast of the UK, Poole is a small town rich in maritime and medieval histories, claiming one of the world’s largest natural harbours. Students engage with this urban and historical landscape, focusing particularly on Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, Dorset, and the Music School, situated opposite. The Music School is a new venture, which recognises both the value of learning music in acoustically pleasing venues, and the importance of sound transcending enclosed spaces in order to enhance the urban environment of Poole. The building’s proximity to Lighthouse, the centre of South West classical music culture and home to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, extends the themes of the Music School into a wider cultural context of performance and the visual arts. MAP responds to these themes through creative and sensitive architectural design.
LOCAL COMMUNITY
Working with highly skilled local industries and professionals is vital to the ethos of this project. Tekne of Poole, supply plywood and other timber offcuts for the frames, exhibition stands and more permanent sustainable additions to the MAP exhibition. The students benefit from the structural and environmental engineering expertise of Ramboll, Southampton, and acoustic engineers ARUP, based in Winchester. They also received specialised urban design practice from Feria Urbanism of Poole. CODA Music Trust, based in New Milton, imparted their experience in music school and public-venue culture.
THE EXHIBITION
Theoretical inspiration behind MAP includes the serial vision methodology of Gordon Cullen’s Townscape, the work of architect Jan Gehl, and the elegant urban theory of Kevin Lynch through Image of the City. Visits to Amsterdam and Venice are key to students comprehending the relationship between medieval and modern, particularly in terms of narrow streets opening out onto small plazas full of convivial activity. Applying the same sense of space to Poole was an important part of the project, taking into consideration the old and new town.
Media through which AUB Architecture students operate includes digital renderings, hand drawn pieces, and to-scale models. Taking into consideration the spaces of Lighthouse, students focused not just on the work itself, but also ways in which it could be presented in order to most effectively communicate and correspond to the environment in which it is situated. Work is therefore displayed in a variety of formats – in specially designed and produced frames, wall mounts and plinths.
MAP is and will continue to be a vital project supporting AUB Architecture students and encouraging their engagement with their immediate urban landscapes. Encompassing the ethos of AUB BA (Hons) Architecture, the project is concerned with local community, and individual creative expression in architecture.
