Interfunktionen 1968 - 1975

Fundació Joan Miró presents 'Behind the Facts. Interfunktionen 1968 - 1975', an exhibition coproduced with the Fundação de Serralves - Museu de Arte Contemporânea in Oporto, selected by Gloria Moure, and containing over 100 works from the period 1968 to 1975.

The works by 43 leading international artists demonstrate the transformation that took place at the end of the 1960s, when artists crossed the strict boundaries between the classic disciplines in the arts (painting, sculpture, etc.) and the spaces in which they were traditionally displayed in order to incorporate new means of expression. For this reason, 'Behind the Facts. Interfunktionen 1968 - 1975' extends beyond the Foundation's exhibition space into the press, television and the city itself, depending on the original supports for which the pieces were created.

The aim of the exhibition is to document a fundamental period in Western culture during which the profound unrest that occurred on all levels was particularly felt in the visual arts, leading to changes that had a decisive effect on the future development of art and laid the foundations for many of the motives and concerns behind today's creative work.

The twelve issues of Interfunktionen, the review published between 1968 and 1975 (the first ten issues by Friedrich Heubach and the last two by Benjamin H. Buchloh), establish a chronological framework for the exhibition, in the same way as the artists taking part in it have determined the selection of the works on show, all of them from the same period but not necessarily included in the magazine.

Set up in 1968 as a form of protest by artists against the conservative line taken by that year's Documenta, the review was certainly an important vehicle for the propagation of ideas based on a European vision and a meeting point between artists in Europe and the United States, independent of the dominant movements of the time. It contained contributions of a theoretical and practical nature, with the 'direct' intervention of the artists, who described and illustrated their own particular strategies. In line with this spirit, many of the artists have been actively involved in deciding how their works should be presented in this exhibition.

Interfunktionen, as its name indicates, was an interdisciplinary publication, with no restrictions as to media and open to all artistic genres. The exhibition will thus include works in a wide variety of art forms - painting, sculpture, installations, film and music - and some will accordingly be shown outside the Foundation.

To tie in with the exhibition, Behind the Facts. Interfunktionen 1968 - 1975, with articles by Friedrich Heubach, Gloria Moure, Birgit Pelzer and the artists themselves, will be published by Edicions Polígrafa in English with an Addendum containing the Catalan translation.

The show will transfer to the Museu de Arte Contemporânea at the Fundação de Serralves in Oporto from 23 July to 24 October 2004.
