comunicato stampa

Grimmuseum is pleased to present „Overmorrow“, a solo exhibition by Hungarian artist János Fodor (1975) from September 13 until October 25. With the presentation of Fodor's early works, the exhibition will give an overview of his oeuvre while newly produced works are functioning as a snapshot of his current practice. Often his works relate to cultural products, such as the art-historical repertoire or scientific theories. In addition, objects from popular culture, design and fashion are part of his work and as „readymades with a twist“ that reveal their distortion at second glance. His pool of themes is inexhaustible as well as his formal realisations through sculptures and objects, painting, prints and photographies. The exhibition will present a collection of works that is dedicated to Fodor's idea of „finding better questions to well-known answers“.

Ada Van Hoorebeke | ABC Berlin, September 18-21, 2014

Ada Van Hoorebeke creates conceptual, anti-monumental works in which the manual work process, traditional techniques, such as batik dyeing processes and materials like textiles, wood and clay are in focus. With her work Gedankengang (Am laufenden Meter) Van Hoorebeke presents a new installation consisting of 150 connected ceramic tiles that expand through the space. On the backside of the tiles are scratched drawings as visualizations of her spontaneous, intuitive thoughts. The title Gedankengang can be taken literally since the two essential and interlinked aspects of the sculpture are named: one the one hand „Gang“ (= walk) which refers to the artist flattening the tiles by walking on them, describing the physical movement, the progress; on the other hand „Gedanken“ (= thoughts) as the sequence of thoughts in images that are inscribed in the backside of the tiles. Through the possiblity of taking apart the installation in 150 segments, its materiality and its existence as an object becomes distinct.

Elise Florenty & Marcel Türkowsky | screening THE SUN EXPERIMENT (ETHER ECHOES) | ABC Programm, Berlin, September 19, 3pm

In their new experimental film The Sun Experiment (Ether Echoes) Elise Florenty and Marcel Türkowsky accompany a young Ukrainian women who participates in an electro-telepathic experiment entering a trance state and embarking on a mental journey. The voice off-screen describes the scene:
“Somewhere near the Black Sea, in a post-Soviet mining town. A very young woman prepares to undergo an electro-telepathic solar experiment via an _excitator_, in a do-it-yourself version of Cold War parapsychic experiments. The sun_s radiation is transformed into electrical energy stimulating the layers of her consciousness and causing an explosion of memories multiplying it into diverse characters, activities and timeframes. Collective visions nested one inside the other.”
As in their previous films, their words set the tone, the ambition is elevated. The aim is a meditation on History, but with small-scale means, dedicated to the most modest materiality. Dust, rug, salad bowl, hourglass, glass vial, dance steps, caps, etc., chime out a tangible world, but one grasped as if on the verge of disappearing. The camera stays close to what it shoots, making felt the thickness of elements as if they were as labile as the electric current or the stuff of dreams, for example. Even the commentaries, those ghostly voices off, are swept up in a dreamlike haze that refuses the limits of real space. This sun experiment, which is never blinding, leads us to a celebration of the languor of abandonment rather than of conquest (the famous Victory over the Sun).
