Martin Russell and Paul Teigh. MOT has called on Paulmart, the latest art duo to hit the scene, to wow its public with their specialised brand of performance initiated, DIY influenced sculpture.
The rent money's due and the big boss has sent round two extras from Conan the
Barbarian, you're short of the readys so they pull your girl's hair and twist
your nose. Snarling that they'll be back later the goons exit, threatening ultra
violence if the balance ain't paid in full. Who ya gonna call? the dukes of
Hazard?, but them good ol' boys ain't been seen in years and Daisy's got so much
front that her back just can't take the weight. What about the A-Team? I hear
you say, they always managed to put together a good show with only a few bits of
sheet steel to turn their van into a tank. All that shooting and no one ever
died, but Hannibal's smoked his last Cuban, Face was last seen running a westend
gallery, and I can't remember the crazy little fella's name. Now BA was the
man, even if he was afraid to fly, but the big guy is no more, may he R.I.P.
Lucky for us there are some new kids on the block and they call themselves
PAULMART.
MOT has called on PAULMART, the latest art duo to hit the scene, to wow its
public with their specialised brand of performance initiated, DIY influenced
sculpture. Martin Russell and Paul Teigh graduated from Reading University last
year. We liked their work so much that we gave them the opportunity to put
together an exhibition for MOT. They combine an almost dated love of materials
with a youthful insolence that conflict to produce installations of utilitarian
design and ambiguous use. One recent video documents PAULMART committing
anti-vandalism, as dressed in boiler suits, they sand and varnish one of the
hoarding boards, protecting a building site in Brixton. The video depicts their
speedy get away, highlighting the actual illegality, of what should be perceived
as an altruistic action. PAULMART expose the beauty and humour within the fabric
of everyday materials employing well documented hard work rather than
surrounding objects with mystique.
For their exhibition PAULMART will be making a large toybox containing flat
packed elements that can be employed to create a show. This will be accompanied
by instructions for assembly and a video of the duo putting the pieces together
in another location. The box will be opened on the opening night and the
elements will be installed in the gallery by a team of specially invited guests.
The work is called BARIP, acknowledging the influence of the TV shows Martin and
Paul watched in their 1980's childhood as they played with their TRANSFORMERS
and dreamt of becoming artists.
All that leaves is how the hell to get BA on the plane.
