ZONES
From march 6th to April 30th 2004, the gallery Erna Hécey presents the
French artist Patrick Tosani's new photograph series in a one-man-show
Zones.
The "glasses of milk" series (Zones 2001) proposes a reflection on the way
full and empty co-exist inside a definite space. The inversion of gravity
underlines this division line, this separating limit.
The eye, caught by material in suspension, may not replace this reverse
gravity into the right sense. This enigma purpose is to question two parts
or two masses separated by a virtual line.
Thus, the intention can be abstract revealing a much larger perception about
conflict, repartition, territory, balance, limit or about what's empty,
what's full, separation, independence, equality.
These terms may be taken in relationship with the individual, the social
body, a geographic or political entity as it was the case when this work was
integrated in a reflection about the tensions in the Middle East.
Patrick Tosani lives and works in Paris. Born in 1954 in Boissy-l'Aillerie
(France), he studies architecture in the 70's and becomes a photographer at
the beginning of the 80's. His artwork focuses on questioning photography as
a medium and its possibilities.
The "ice cubes" series (1982-83) or the "rains" series (1986) are
functioning as allegories of the time cut produced by photography. The
artist is calling this "the surfacing of reality " and thinks his work in
relationship with the physical confrontation with the viewer. With the
appearance of the body in his recent works as in the series "nails" (1990),
"bodies" and "clothes" (1996-97) which were shown at the gallery, he shows
that "vision will always be struck by the ineluctable volume of human
bodies" (G. Didi-Huberman).
The work by Patrick Tosani has already been shown in several one-man-shows
as for instance at the ICA in London in 1987, at MAC of Rochechouart in
1988, at Magasin in Grenoble in 1991, at the Art Institute of Chicago in
1992, the ARC du Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1993 and the
Centre National de la Photographie de Paris in 1998Å He has also
participated in a large number of group shows or photography shows.
