Masterpieces of Avant-Garde Photography. Opening with a prologue of exemplary nineteenth-century photographs, the exhibition will enable visitors to rediscover the broad range and the multiple facets of photography from the real to the surreal via rare original prints by notable photographers of the era.
On the 175th anniversary of the invention of photography, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is devoting an extensive exhibition to photography of the 1920s and 1930s. REALSURREAL presents a special selection of circa 150 masterpieces of photography between “New Objectivity” and surrealist tendencies from the unique Siegert Collection in Munich that has never before been shown to this extent.
The fact that pictorial evidence or staged realities can be generated photographically depending on context and standpoint is historically grounded in “New Vision” photography. This international current characterizes the innovative exchange of glances during the interwar period when a young generation of photographers turned away from “Impressionist” pictorialism and reflected on the specific characteristics of photography’s means. The positions range from the exact recording of the seen in portraiture and industrial photography and the Bauhaus’s selection of innovative details and perspectives to the photomontage and such technical experiments as the photogram and solarization as well as the staged image.
The Siegert Collection focuses particularly on photography in Germany, Parisian Surrealism and the Prague scene. Based on rare vintage prints, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg takes the term “New Vision” literally in order to rediscover the scope and diversity of photography between the real and the surreal.
