New director of the Stedelijk Museum emphasises the important role of the Rijksakademie for artist development

Beatrix Ruf has just officially opened RijksakademieOPEN 2014. In her opening speech the new director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam emphasised how important - and how special - it is that the Rijksakademie gives time and space to artists to experiment and develop their work.

Beatrix Ruf: “I was impressed last time to see the workshops. [..]They’re almost like scientific labs where people are able to experiment and test things out. In a world where everything is directed to an immediate product, there is no time or funds to experiment. No time to say, ‘yes, maybe there is failure’. I think failure in the development of an artist is a very crucial thing.

Places like this that give space and time to young thinkers and artists to develop and question their ideas are very important. They’re getting more rare so they’re becoming more of an endangered species. And have to be treasured and saved all over the world.”

Alphons Kurstjens, director Rabobank Amsterdam, emphasised in his speech the important role of the Rijksakademie for the city: “Institutions like this make the city a lively place with room for imagination, creativity and connection.“

The results of the Rijksakademie residency can be seen this weekend during RijksakademieOPEN.
