comunicato stampa

The Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition program, on view December 3, 2014, through May 29, 2015.

This year marks several milestones: Don and Mera Rubell have now been married and collecting contemporary art for 50 years and their foundation in Miami, created with their son, Jason Rubell, is in its 20th year. On the occasion of these events, the Rubell Family Collection will mount its most ambitious exhibition program to date and publish a 700-page collection overview catalog titled Highlights and Artists’ Writings, Volume 1.

The Foundation’s first floor will contain six commissioned solo exhibitions by the following artists: Will Boone, Aaron Curry, Lucy Dodd, Mark Flood, David Ostrowski, and Kaari Upson. The artists visited the Foundation throughout the year and developed new, large-scale bodies of work, some in situ, specifically for the exhibition.

The second floor exhibition, ‘To Have and to Hold,’ will occupy 20 galleries and is a celebration of the Rubells’ history of collecting art. Starting with the late 1970s it offers a loose chronology of early as well as recent acquisitions, simultaneously revealing movements in art and cross-generational influences. Key works by Jean Michel-Basquiat, Mark Bradford, Cecily Brown, Marlene Dumas, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Glenn Ligon, Reinhard Mucha, Elizabeth Peyton, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Rosemarie Trockel, and younger artists such as Josh Kline, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Michail Pirgelis and Lior Shvil, are exhibited along with text from the artists. A complimentary audio tour is also accessible via smartphones.

To celebrate the opening of these exhibitions, on Thursday, December 4, from 9am to noon, Jennifer Rubell will be presenting her annual breakfast project: a new, large-scale, food-based installation titled 50 Cakes.

At 700 pages, Highlights and Artists’ Writings, Volume 1 is the Foundation’s most extensive overview catalog to date and includes text written for this publication from many of the artists. At its most recent count, over 6,800 works by 833 artists make up the Rubells’ collection; this catalog illustrates 880 of these works by 250 of the artists. The overview is arranged by the date the artist’s work was first acquired, providing a timeline of the life of the Collection. Also included is a comprehensive list of loaned artwork—to over 200 institutions in 26 countries—specific to the works within the overview. These loans and the overview itself, underscore the Rubells’ commitment to artists and viewers alike that has been critical to the development of the collection throughout its history. To pre-order at $29.95 please click here to email the Foundation.
