In Black, White and Gray. For the exhibitions the artist presents a series of paintings and site specific performances. They will be on view most clearly in five free performances, when 12 dancers from Shen Wei Dance Arts will move among the audience.
MDC Museum of Art + Design (MOA+D) in partnership with MDC Live Arts will present Shen Wei - In Black, White and Gray, the artist’s first museum exhibition in the United States dedicated to a solo series of paintings in collaboration with site specific performances. This world premiere exhibition combines Shen Wei’s award winning choreography with a groundbreaking new series of large scale works to be unveiled during Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 at the College’s Historic Freedom Tower in Downtown Miami.
Shen Wei is perhaps best known as the lead choreographer for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which earned acclaim worldwide. The Washington Post has called Shen Wei, "One of the great artists of our time," and The New York Times proclaimed, "If there is something to write home about in the dance world, it is the startlingly imaginative work of the Chinese-born choreographer Shen Wei."
Although he has had several small gallery shows, this will be Shen Wei’s largest and
most ambitious visual art exhibit by far. In Black, White & Greywill occupy an entire floor
of Miami’s Freedom Tower, with 11 paintings ranging from 16 to nearly 30 feet wide. A
number of collectors, followers and journalists are coming from China and elsewhere for
the occasion.
―This year is the time for me to say I am ready to show people I am a painter,‖ Shen Wei
says. ―It’s such an important time and such an important project for me. It is one of the
nicest things that has happened to me in my life.‖
Jeremy Mikolajczak, executive director of the MDC Museum, says the project is
significant for the college and for Shen Wei’s expanding artistic identity.
